Aritz Egea and Marta Molist, Spanish Champions

Hannes Namberger wins with a record in CSP, Kevin Vermeulen wins in the best MiM of  its history and Eli Rios wins the female CSP

Penyagolosa Trails promised one of the best editions in its history and expectations have been met. Very fast and closely contested races that have been resolved with very tight finishes in the MiM and with a spectacular record from the Hannes Namberger race. Frenchman Kevin Vermeulen beat Aritz Egea for a few seconds, who was proclaimed Spanish champion of Ultra Trail Running of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation. In the female category, Marta Molist has beaten Gemma Arenas and Mónica Vives, in another tight final.

Not even the cold, wind and rain have stopped the runners who have flown through the Penyagolosa Trails trails today. The long-awaited edition of the MiM brought together the best poster in history and a very high race pace has been imposed. In the first part of the race, the great entertainer was Anders Kjaerevik, who was the leader at the Bassa and Les Useres aid stations. There it was already foreseen that everything could be decided in the final part, since the differences were very small and in less than 5 minutes more than a ten athletes marched. In the female category the same thing happened, Mónica Vives, Marta Molist and Gemma Arenas fought one on one with few differences. At Torroselles (km 41), Vermeulen caught up with Kjaerevik and at Xodos (km 50), Aritz Egea overtook the Frenchman. Behind the fight continued with runners like Borja Fernández or José Ángel Fernández who continued to advance a short distance from the head of the race. The Cantabrian, winner in 2019, has gone back to more like in that edition and in the Marinet he has been progressing. Vermeulen and Aritz fought one on one at Marinet and Banyadera, a point 3 kilometers from the finish line where they passed together. In the end, Aritz paid off the effort and Vermeulen won with an incredible time of 5:20:15, ahead of the Basque by 24 seconds. The podium was completed by Anders Kjaerevik, 4:18 behind the winner. In this way, Aritz Egea has been proclaimed champion of Spain, with Borja Fernández (4th in the MiM) second and José Ángel Fernández (5th in the MiM) third. While in the women’s category, Marta Molist has put one more gear after Les Useres and has managed to gain an advantage that in the end would be decisive. However, despite the fact that the winner of the MiM 2021 has lowered last year’s mark (6:19:08 today), Gemma Arenas and Mónica Vives have sold the defeat very dearly and in the end the three have entered in 8 minutes of difference.

Hannes Namberger and Eli Ríos win in CSP

The German Hannes Namberger started as the big favorite in the CSP and has met the predictions. The runner has set a strong pace from the start and has achieved distances that have gradually increased. In the first part of the race, the difference with Dani Jung was 6-7 minutes, but on the climb to Culla he gained a significant advantage. As the race progressed, the German was flying and setting stratospheric partials. So much so that he was the first runner in history to drop below 11 hours, setting a record of 10:49:46. Behind him, Dani Jung and Mark Darbyshire arrived and completed the podium

In the women’s category, the Bolivian Eli Ríos has beaten Eva Mesado and has achieved her first victory in the CSP. The Castellón runner has led the first part of the race, but Eli has overtaken her after she became daylight. In the end, 13:56:19 minutes for the winner, prevailing by 20 minutes.

A day for history

Penyagolosa Trails has experienced a historic day. In the previous edition, this edition was already compared to that of the Trails World Championships due to the expectation, the title at stake and the atmosphere. And so it has been, with the fans dedicated and some races to remember. The race director, Tico Cervera, pointed out that “it is very special that the MiM has hosted the Spanish Championship and that it has done it again with races that we will remember for a long time”. In addition, Cervera wanted to once again thank the sponsors for their support, especially the Diputació de Castelló, the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation and the Generalitat Valenciana. And he has also remembered “all the work carried out by the collaborating clubs, the volunteers and the entire human and technical team that has been behind this edition”.

This year, the races have been followed live on the website www.localhost/penyagolosa and also on À Punt, Teledeporte and Esport 3, with an unprecedented technical deployment, with 25 people working to overcome all the technical difficulties that this tour.

Penyagolosa trails will open the pre-registration period next Monday, December 27th

The organization is working closely with the Environmental Department to guarantee the sustainability of the event

The first step towards Penyagolsa 2022 starts now. The pre-registration period will open next December 27th  and will end on January 10th. The pre-registration will have to be made through the webpage www.localhost/penyagolosa and the lottery will be celebrated on January 13th.

Two months have gone by since the last edition of Penyagolosa Trails. We have been working hard preparing the new edition which will be celebrated April 22nd -24th.

Among the top priorities for Penyagolosa Trails, one of them is to have zero impact on the environment, for that reason we work to protect the environment before, during and after the event is celebrated. We have been closely associated with environment-friendly policies since our beginnings but we want to push forward and commit even more to the protection of our surroundings. Last months, we have been working together with the Environmental Department to guarantee the environmental sustainability of Penyagolosa Trails.

The greatness of mountain sports remains in the environment. MiM and CSP cross places formed centuries ago with years of history. Sacred landscapes with exceptional wildlife and spectacular scenery. For those reasons we have to work towards making sports and nature go hand in hand, help each other and complement each other.

In conclusion, Penyagolosa Trails works towards creating sustainable and responsible races with the environment. The future consists of taking care of what we have, of each runner and of every person. All together we can take care of our nature.

Trail can’t be stopped

Penyagolosa Trails presents its new image, with the slogan “Trail Can’t be Stopped”. The slogan refers to the comeback of races after the hardest stages of the pandemic and to the desire of runners to be back in competitions such as Penyagolosa Trails. This year’s image pretends to break out of the established and focus on the mountain and the runner using the combination of three colors: red, black and white.

Miguel Caballero and Marta Molist (MiM), Aleksei Tolstenko and Anete Svilpe (CSP), winners of the most awaited edition of Penyagolosa Trails.

The Spanish runners won the Marató i Mitja, while the international runners took the first places in the CSP.

Everyone was looking forward to this edition of Penyagolosa Trails, which had to be postponed in 2020 due to the covid health crisis. From day one, the long expectation made this race an epic and essential event in the province’s sports calendar, especially among trail lovers. And it did not disappoint anyone: the province of Castellón had their eyes all over the MiM and the CSP, and celebrated the triumph of both Miguel Caballero and Marta Molist, in the Marató i Mitja of 60km, and Aleksei Tolstenko and Anete Svilpe in the 110km Castelló – Penyagolosa race. The Russian and the Latvian athletes imposed themselves at the finish line, located in Sant Joan de Penyagolosa.

MiM Winners

Native from Aragon, Miguel Caballero placed first and won the MiM trophy, with a time of 05:34:16, a result of his veteran and impressive race-skills management. A profound expert of the route, this is Caballero’s third MiM victory, after winning in 2015 and 2017.

For her part, Marta Molist came to Penyagolosa Trails very well prepared, this year being the most important of her entire career. After a titanic fight with Gemma Arenas from Castilla-La Mancha, the Catalan runner has imposed her leadership dominating the second half of the course and finally obtaining the victory.

Men’s second and third places went to José Ángel Fernández and Abel Carretero, respectively, while women’s second place went to Gemma Arenas and third place to Eva Mesado.

CSP Winners

The Russian runner Aleksei Tolstenko won after competing for the very first time in Penyagolosa Trails. He crossed the finish line at 11:48, with an exact time of 11:48:45, after having disputed an epic race with Spanish Rodrigo Monasor. A duel of titans which Tolstenko got the best of.

The great champion of the day was Anete Svilpe. The Latvian runner was relentless, dominating the race during the entire 110km and giving us a vibrant finish at 14:44, with an exact time of 14:44:08.

Over CSP, second and third place in the men’s race went to Rodrigo Monasor and the Romanian runner Robert Hajnal, respectively, and in the women’s group second place went to the local athlete from C.M. Vistabella club María Obrero Catalán and third place to the Biscayan Leire Martínez.

Special awards

The awards ceremony of absolute categories moved, for the first time, to Vistabella, meeting point for the celebration of runners, families, volunteers and the organization. In so doing the event did not negatively affect the Penyagolosa Natural Park fauna.

The trophy for the absolute winners was designed by renowned artist Manuel Sáez from Castellón. It represents a footprint that, in three dimensions actually resembles a foot. A small sculpture that takes shape by connecting one oval piece after another, an shape that in different cultures symbolizes eternity. For this edition, the trophy was designed in purple, a color associated with the feminist movement.

The director of Penyagolosa Trails, Tico Cervera is very happy with the unfolding of the race, which became a success due to all the security measures, coordination, doctors, buses, communications, and volunteers they counted with. Besides, on Sunday, October 17 at 10:45 a.m regional channel À Punt will broadcast Penyagolosa Trails for the fans of the event to relive the race from the comfort of their homes.

Local athlete María Obrero Catalán placed second, followed by Basque runner Leire Martínez, who gets to complete the podium with a third place.

Anete Svilpe was relentless. The Latvian athlete found no rival and, after 14:44:08 competing, she finally achieved the goal she had been pursuing since 2018, when she first disputed the World Championship of Penyagolosa Trails: being the first to cross the finish line. Anete Svilpe dominated the entire race during the 110km, reaching Sant Joan de Penyagolosa in less than fifteen hours.

A duel of titans between the runners Marta Molist and Gemma Arenas ended with Marta Molist being the first to cross the finish line at 12:28, with a time of 06:28:04.

Gemma Arenas and Eva Mesado complete MiM’s female podium.

The victory however went to Marta Molist, after being the first to finish the race with a time of 06:28:04. This adds another success to her long list of sports achievements. Molist came with the desire to win and she did it, after a titanic fight with Gemma Arenas, who finished second with a time of 06:37:54. During the course of the race both fought for the leadership. Meanwile, Gemma Arenas has three victories in Penyagolosa Trails (one in the 2016 MiM and two in the CSP, in 2017 and 2019), and, this year she placed second in the 100km race of the Salomon Ultra Pirineu and has been proclaimed runner-up in the Skyrunning world championship.

Finally, Rodrigo Monasor arrived second at the podium, with a time of 12:07:11; followed by the Romanian runner Robert Hajnal, who started as one of the favorites and got the third position, in a time of 12:08:50, thus completing the podium of the CSP Penyagolosa Trails 2021.
